Banker, Filmmaker, Light & Health Scientist

John Ott’s discoveries in the 1950s through the 1970s were the first to hypothesize and study that natural light, with it’s full-spectrum of visible light plus the infrared and ultraviolet wavelengths were essential to healthy life.

This was first observed in plants and well documented, as he was a still-photography pioneer capturing the moments flowers opened for Walt Disney documentaries.

Ott also studied the effects of light’s color temperture (CCT) on human mental health, leading to his work to develop better fluorescent lamps. Fluorescent lamps unfortunately are mercury-based and thus essentially UV light engines with strength in blue wavelengths, so significant improvements have been made but full-spectrum (as observed in natural daylight) is virtually impossible.

Many commercial and non-profit websites have more info on John Ott’s work …

An important architect who was not without his critics, but was truly moved by problems he saw with effects of industrial urban living, and especially dedicated to creating better living conditions for crowded cities.

“I use light abundantly, as you may have suspected; Light for me is the fundamental basis of architecture.  I compose with light.”
- Le Corbusier (Charles-Edouard Jeanneret)
